2021: The Year of Choosing You

It’s official: 2021 is the year of you.

This year we aren’t going to waste our time complaining about how difficult last year was. We aren’t going to whine about what is lacking in our lives. And we most certainly aren’t going to continue any of our toxic behaviors (*looking at my ex who was cyber stalking me on Twitter earlier this month*). This year, you are choosing you.

What does “choosing you” mean exactly?

In essence, we are going to choose the things that make us feel good about ourselves and about life. We are choosing better for ourselves. We are choosing happiness, brightness, optimism, whatever you want to call it. This year we are choosing self care.

For me, this means taking a step back from “the hustle” to prevent burnout. It means spending more time creating. Painting. Crafting. Blogging. Reading. I’m going to make self care a priority, starting with monthly massages and weekly writing sessions on Zoom.

How will you be choosing yourself more in 2021?

Maybe for you, it’s buying your favorite snack and having a movie night with your partner (or family, or just all by yourself!) once a week. It might be asking your partner to keep the kids occupied on Sunday morning so you can sleep in — you do so much for them after all, it’s the least they could do! Or maybe it’s treating yourself to an activity you enjoy but don’t get to do often (like my monthly massages LOL).

Choosing you could mean leaving a toxic relationship. It could be unapologetically cutting off friendships that do not serve you, or family who does not support you. Maybe choosing you means moving to a new city, or finding a new job that fulfills you.

Whatever your intentions are for choosing you, let’s start this year out by laying a foundation of positive energy.

The energy you put out into the world is what the universe gives back to you. If you are constantly looking for the bad in life and viewing the world through a dark lens, of course the image you capture will be dim and uninviting. But the thing is, you can always add light to the darkness.

You can choose to lighten whatever load weighs you down by allowing yourself to do more for you. Choosing you doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the care you give others; it simply gives you a little more room to breathe and time to relax.

After all, we all need a little R&R. Especially after the past year.

So take a moment. Clear your head. Then ask yourself, what do you want more of this year? What would make you happy? What is no longer serving you, or is holding you back? Find what you need to let go of, and what you need to invite more of into your life. Then fucking do it.

What’s on your list for “choosing you?”
